1. a member of a religious and military order called Knights Templars, founded among the Crusaders to protect the Holy Sepulcher and pilgrims to the Holy Land.
2. a member of an order of Masons, the Knights Templar.
3. Also, templar. British. a barrister or other person, who has chambers in the Inner or Middle Temple in London.
[< Medieval Latin templarius < Latin templum temple (because the order occupied a building in Jerusalem near the site known as Solomon's Temple)]
